adult snakes commonly measure 91.4 183 cm (36.0 72.0 in) in total length (including tail), few exceeding 200 cm (79 in). longest recorded total length date 256.5 cm (101.0 in).


adults shiny black dorsally, cream or white chin , throat. belly has irregular black , white checkerboard pattern, becoming uniformly slate gray towards tail. juveniles have dark dorsal blotches on grayish ground color. ventral pattern in juveniles same in adults. eyes round black pupil, , particularly in juveniles not present in adults, distinct white margin.


the dorsal scales weakly keeled, , arranged in 23 27 rows @ midbody.


males , females have same coloration. males have proportionally longer tails (16-19% of total body length) compared females (14–18% of total body length).
