he appointed lecturer in department of earth sciences, university of leeds in 1969, position held until 1982. 1982 until 1989 held post of assistant director in research in department of earth sciences @ university of cambridge. during time obtained master of arts degree university of cambridge in 1985, followed doctor of science degree in 1989. same year, made reader in geochemistry @ cambridge, before being appointed chair of professor of ocean geochemistry , paleochemistry (cambridge) in 1999.
early career
his career focused on behaviour of trace metals in oceans , sediments, , on fluid flow through oceanic crust , sediments under influence of off-axis hydrothermal circulation. became 1 of first low-temperature geochemists appreciate how radiogenic isotopes might used solve problems of marine geochemistry, developing seawater strontium isotope curve cenozoic – reliable isotopic record available phanerozoic.
he worked on iodine speciation in seawater , porewaters, separation of cerium other rare earth elements in classic example of redox behaviour; has developed precise mass spectrometric analysis method – , made first ever measurements of oceanic profiles – 10 rare earth elements. rare earths used tracers in sedimentary geochemistry , palaeoceanography.
later research
elderfield s later research focused on ocean chemistry , paleochemistry, , results have had far-reaching impact on academic geochemistry discipline. contributed marine chemistry, notably fate of metals in hydrothermal processes, formation of manganese nodules,< , biogeochemical cycles of elements including iodine , strontium.
his latter interests included defining chemical proxies biogenic carbonates , using them understand ancient ocean. pioneered development of foraminiferal magnesium thermometry, has become accepted estimation of past ocean temperatures.
