the cms founded first mission @ rangihoua in bay of islands in 1814 , on next decade established farms , schools in area. thomas kendall , william hall directed, in 1814, proceed bay of islands in active, vessel purchased samuel marsden service of mission, there reopen communication ruatara, local chief; earlier attempt establish mission in bay of islands had been delayed consequence of boyd massacre in whangaroa harbour in 1809. kendall , hall left new south wales on 14 march 1814 on active exploratory journey bay of islands. met rangatira (chiefs) of ngāpuhi including ruatara , uncle hongi hika; hongi hika , ruatara travelled kendall when returned australia on 22 august 1814. kendall, hall , john king, returned bay of islands on active on 22 december 1814 establish mission.
in 1819 marsden made second visit new zealand, bringing him john gare butler francis hall , james kemp lay settlers. william puckey, boatbuilder , carpenter, came family, including william gilbert puckey assist in putting buildings @ kerikeri. protector of kerikeri mission station chief ruatara , following death in 1815, hongi hika accepted responsibility protection of mission.
butler , kemp took charge of kerikeri mission, proved unable develop harmonious working relationship. in 1820, marsden paid third visit, on hms dromedary, bringing james shepherd. in 1823, marsden paid fourth visit, bringing him henry williams , wife marianne richard davis, farmer, , william fairburn, carpenter, , respective families. in 1826 henry s brother william , wife jane joined cms mission , settled @ paihia in bay of islands. immediate protector of paihia mission chief, te koki, , wife ana hamu, woman of high rank , owner of land occupied mission.

the cms mission house in kerikeri, completed in 1822, ranks new zealand s oldest surviving building. in days cms funded activities largely through trade; thomas kendall, many secular settlers, sold weapons māori people, fuelling musket wars (1807–1842). kendall brought māori war-chief hongi hika london in 1820, creating minor sensation. when henry williams became leader of missionaries @ paihia in 1823, stopped trade in muskets. mission schools provided religious education english language practical skills. first baptism occurred in 1825. evangelical mission of cms achieved success after baptism of ngāpuhi chief rawiri taiwhanga in 1830. example influenced others baptised christian faith. in 1833 mission established @ kaitaia in northland mission @ puriri in thames area. in 1835 missions established in bay of plenty , waikato regions @ tauranga, matamata , rotorua. possessions of these missions plundered during inter-tribal war between māori people of matamata, rotorua , waikato river. in 1836 mission open in manukau harbour region.

the concern european impact on new zealand, particularly lawlessness among europeans , breakdown in traditional restraints in māori society, meant cms welcomed united kingdom s annexation of new zealand in january 1840, henry williams assisting captain william hobson translating document became known treaty of waitangi. henry williams involved in explaining treaty māori leaders, firstly @ meetings william hobson @ waitangi, later when travelled port nicholson, queen charlotte s sound, kapiti, waikanae , otaki persuade māori chiefs sign treaty. involvement in these debates brought him increasingly uncomfortable role of mediating between 2 races .

the cms missionaries held low church beliefs common among 19th century evangelical members of anglican church. there wide gap between views of cms missionaries , bishops , other clergy of high church traditions of oxford movement (also known tractarians) proper form of ritual , religious practice. bishop selwyn, appointed first anglican bishop of new zealand in 1841, held high church (tracharian) views although appointed cms missionaries positions in anglican church of new zealand including appointing william williams first bishop of waiapu.
