the mid-1990s marked open conflict between schönhuber , schlierer factions. while schönhuber sought united right-wing model party, schlierer wanted clear distance extremists . schönhuber resigned party altogether in 1995, , party subsequently contested series of unsuccessful state elections. litmus test schlierer s leadership occurred in state election in baden-württemberg in march 1996, had stated many times resign party leader if party failed reelected state parliament. schlierer succeeded in goal, against expectations, republicans won 9.1% of vote , fourteen seats. in following years, election results party again dropped, , in 1999 european parliament election won 1.7% of vote.

in 2009 federal elections, republicans received 0.4 percent of total national vote. strongest showing in states of rhineland-palatinate , baden-württemberg, in received 1.1 percent of vote. in 2013 federal elections, republicans received 0.2 percent of total national vote.
