gwr no.111, great bear


prior 1923 grouping, 5 4-6-2 locomotives had been built in united kingdom. first of these no. 111, great bear, introduced great western railway (gwr) in 1908. experimental locomotive proved more powerful railway s requirements , heavy of infrastructure. result, scrapped in 1924 , many of parts used build gwr 4073 castle class 4-6-0 ten-wheeler locomotive.


the great northern railway (gnr) , north eastern railway (ner) each built 2 pacific types in 1922, later become classes a1/a3 , a2 on london , north eastern railway (lner). further examples of these 2 classes built lner after 1923.



lner class a3 4472, flying scotsman


the gnr class a1, designed sir nigel gresley , later rebuilt improved class a3, featured 3 cylinders , innovative conjugated valve gear. class consisted of 79 locomotives. after initial teething problems, proved excellent design , 1 of them, flying scotsman, first british locomotive officially recorded reaching 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour).



the lner class a4 mallard , holder of world speed record steam traction.


this speed surpassed streamlined lner class a4 of 1935, when no. 2509 silver link reached 112 miles per hour (180 kilometres per hour) on inaugural run in 1935. 3 years later, on 3 july 1938, no. 4468 mallard touched 126 miles per hour (203 kilometres per hour), still world speed record steam traction. 35 locomotives of class built 1938.


a further 89 pacific locomotives of peppercorn class a1, thompson class a1/1, peppercorn class a2, thompson class a2/1, thompson class a2/2 , thompson class a2/3 either built or rebuilt lner edward thompson , arthur peppercorn, although many appeared in british railways (br) era after 1948. in 2008, 1 further locomotive of peppercorn class a1 design, 60163 tornado, built a1 steam locomotive trust.



lms princess royal class princess elizabeth


the london, midland , scottish railway (lms) introduced twelve princess royal class pacific locomotives in 1933 , enlarged design streamlined princess coronation class of 1937. 37 locomotives of coronation class built 1947, 1 more appearing in 1948 in br era. coronation no. 6220, first of class, reached 114 miles per hour (183 kilometres per hour) on 29 june 1937 , briefly held british speed record steam traction, until bettered lner mallard year later. lms princess royal class used basis unusual experimental locomotive, turbomotive, used turbines instead of cylinders.



battle of britain class no. 34072 257 squadron


during second world war, southern railway (sr) introduced 2 classes of pacific, designed new zealander oliver bulleid. these merchant navy class , west country , battle of britain class. these 2 classes continued built in br era , totaled thirty merchant navy class locomotives , 110 west country , battle of britain class locomotives.


the 55 br standard class 7 britannia pacific locomotives, introduced in 1951, of simple expansion two-cylinder design walschaerts valve gear. conservative design reflected requirement more cost-effective, lower maintenance locomotive. ten locomotives of lighter version, br standard class 6, introduced in 1952.



br standard class 8 duke of gloucester


the final pacific design in united kingdom br standard class 8 no. 71000 duke of gloucester, of 1 built in 1954. had many parts in common britannias, had 3 cylinders , caprotti valve gear. used test-bed of sorts further developed improved efficiency , power stated goal.
